Three Trapped And Killed In “One Leg” Mining Pit Collapse At Bomeso And Santreso Odumase.

Three young people have been trapped and killed after a mining pit collapsed on them at Bomeso and Santreso in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, two females and one male, were between the ages of 22 and 26 years. According to eyewitnesses, the victims were engaged in illegal mining popularly known as “one leg” when the pit caved in on them while they were working underground.

The two women are said to be residents of Bomeso while the man hails from Santreso.

It is understood that the group had gone to the site late in the evening to mine, a practice that has become common among some youth in the area despite warnings from authorities.

The Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Isaac Kyei Andoh, confirmed the incident to Sompa News.

He said the bodies were retrieved during the late night by community members with support from some residents, and have since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and identification.

Hon. Kyei Andoh said the incident has brought deep sadness to the entire community, as families and friends mourn the sudden loss of the young people who were believed to be breadwinners.

He expressed worry over the increasing number of youth venturing into “one leg” mining in the area, describing it as dangerous and life-threatening.

The Assembly Member appealed to the Municipal Assembly, security agencies and other stakeholders to intensify education and enforcement to stop illegal mining activities that continue to claim lives.

The police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue.
