Cadet Corps Represents One Of The Finest Avenues Nurturing Future Leaders – Western Naval Commander

The Ghana Navy Memorial Day Drill Competition 2025 was commemorated in Sekondi with a call to the nation’s youth to embrace discipline, patriotism, and teamwork as guiding principles for leadership and service.

Addressing the gathering, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, underscored the importance of the Cadet Corps in shaping the next generation.

He described it as a critical platform for instilling values that go beyond military training.

“The need to instill these and other important values in the next generation cannot be overemphasized.

It is said that a cadet today is a leader tomorrow. Indeed, the Cadet Corps represents one of the finest avenues for nurturing future leaders,” Commodore Ayelazono stated.

This year’s competition brought together nine cadet schools, each displaying skill, endurance, and teamwork on the parade ground in memory of Ghana’s fallen sailors who gave their lives in defense of sovereignty and international peace.

After a spirited contest, Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) emerged winners, securing the bragging rights as the best drill squad.

Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School came second, earning praise for their discipline and precision.

He again explained that cadet training equips young men and women not only for possible future careers in the armed forces but also for life as responsible citizens in whichever profession they choose.

Turning to the day’s competition, the Flag Officer highlighted that its purpose extended beyond victory. “Healthy competition brings out the best in us and prevents complacency.

Today’s competition is therefore not about who wins or loses. Rather, it is about testing limits, improving standards, and fostering unity,” he emphasized.

Commodore Ayelazono congratulated all the schools for their hard work, determination, and impressive performances.

To the winners, he urged moderation in celebration, while reminding the other participants that they were all “winners in patriotism.”
