Kenyasi Residents Threaten Fresh Demonstration Over Newmont Roads

Civil society organisations (CSOs), assembly members and the youth of Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have called on Newmont Ghana Gold Limited to urgently respond to their demands following a recent demonstration.
Addressing a press conference, Chairman of the Omanbotantim Association, Oman Kofi Adusei, said the former Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon.Asomah Kyeremeh, directed Newmont to construct roads for the communities in which the company operates.
According to him, Newmont began constructing the roads using “sapete” instead of asphalt, a move the communities strongly oppose.
He explained that sapete roads deteriorate within a year, hence their demand for durable asphalt roads.
Oman stated that although Newmont assured them their concerns would be communicated to management, the communities have received no feedback.
On Tuesday, January 20, residents organized a demonstration to press home their demands.
He said after the protest, Newmont again promised to relay their concerns to their authorities and respond accordingly.
However, two weeks after the demonstration, the communities are yet to hear from the company.
He warned that if Newmont fails to respond positively to their demands, the residents will organise a much larger demonstration.
End.
