Chiefs Oppose Gun-Firing Ban, Call For Training Instead.
Some traditional leaders in the country have called on the government, through the Ministry of Interior, not to place a total ban on gun firing during traditional ceremonies.
Instead, they are urging the ministry to adopt measures to train chiefs and their elders on the safe handling of firearms at traditional events.
This fellow the Ministry of Interior’s strict directives banning and regulating firearms at traditional ceremonies have sparked mixed reactions among Ghana’s traditional rulers.
While some chiefs have complied fully to ensure community safety, others say the restrictions threaten historic customs and cultural heritage.
The Nguabado Divisional Chief of the Edina Traditional Area in the Central Region, Nana Ekua Amoan, made the call during the final funeral rites of the late Kokwaado Chief, Nana Kwansah II.
According to him, a total ban on gun firing will negatively impact Ghana’s traditional customs.
“Our customs are done through our gods. The firing of guns drives away evil spirits whenever traditional leaders perform ceremonies.
Instead of a ban, we are calling on the Minister for the Interior to embark on education on the use, regulations and rules for handling guns.”
The funeral attracted many prominent paramount chiefs from across the country. There was a colorful display of traditional dance and beautiful African attire, showcasing the rich traditions of the people.
The Paramount Chief of Akuapem Traditional Area in the Eastern Region, who joined other paramount chiefs from Komenda, Edina and other areas.
Nana Odehye Nfum Spokesperson, speaking on behalf of the Okuapemhene, called on the youth to embrace their culture, which he believes will transform them and keep them away from bad activities.
He also expressed concern about the numerous insults and attacks happening on social media.
Nana Nfum therefore urged students in the Central Region to abstain from drugs and alcoholic.
“The youth must go back to our culture. That is where our discipline and values come from.
Stay away from drugs, alcohol, and the insults on social media.”
