Manso Datano Plunged Into Total Darkness As Three Transformers Break Down — ECG Turns Deaf Ears To Residents’ Cry.
Residents of Manso Datano in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region are living in total darkness and unbearable conditions following the breakdown of three transformers serving the community for several years, with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) allegedly turning deaf ears to their persistent cries.
According to the residents, the damaged transformers have plunged the entire Datano community into darkness, making life extremely difficult and unbearable for the people who are predominantly farmers and traders.
They disclosed that although the community was connected to the national grid about 20 years ago, there has not been any electricity expansion project since then.
As a result, all newly developed sites and extensions in the town have no access to electricity.
The residents revealed that they have made several complaints and followed up to the offices of the Electricity Company of Ghana and the District Assembly, but no one is responding to their plight.
“If you divide Manso Datano into three, only one section is having light while the other two sections are in total darkness, which is very bad.
What pains us most is that ECG officials still come to the town to collect light bills from us, even when we don’t have light. If care is not taken, this will turn bloody one day,” some angry residents lamented.
They added that they feel neglected and abandoned because the authorities have refused to say anything tangible about when the transformers will be fixed.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, the Assemblyman for Manso Datano, Hon. Kwame Amponsah, disclosed that apart from the total blackout confronting the town, their road network is in a very deplorable state.
He said the dusty nature of the road is affecting their health, as many residents, especially children and the aged, are suffering from respiratory and related health complications due to excessive dust inhaled daily.
“This is a wake-up call to inform ECG that three transformers at Datano have been destroyed and must be fixed urgently. We cannot continue to live like this.
Our businesses are collapsing, our children cannot study at night, and our health is at risk,” the Assemblyman stressed.
The traditional leaders of Manso Datano also added their voice to the call, lamenting that they are far behind in terms of development because they feel neglected by government.
Nana Kwame Adjei, Abusuapanin of the Asona Family, in an emotional appeal, called on government to bring development projects to Manso Datano because they are also part of Ghana and deserve their share of the national cake.
He also passionately appealed to His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to give them a chief, as the absence of a substantive chief is also hindering their development and unity.
