KATH Resumes Emergency Admissions As Pressure On A&E Centre Eases.
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has resumed emergency admissions after its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre became overwhelmed with patients, exceeding its operational capacity.
Speaking to media, almost 24 hours after the hospital announced a temporary halt to new emergency admissions, the Acting Medical Director, Dr. Yaw Larbi, indicated that bed availability at the facility has improved slightly.
He explained that discussions have been held with medical superintendents of facilities under the Ghana Health Service and other private hospitals to temporarily manage emergency cases before referring them to KATH when necessary.Ghana travel guide
According to Dr. Larbi, some health facilities that possess the required equipment and infrastructure but lack specialist personnel will collaborate closely with specialists at KATH to ensure patients receive the emergency care they need.
Dr. Larbi also appealed for the strategic upgrading of existing health facilities in the Ashanti Region and the operationalisation of hospitals at Afari, Sewua, and other facilities with the capacity to complement KATH’s services as the region’s only tertiary healthcare institution.
The hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre, which was designed to accommodate 37 patients, is currently handling far more than its intended capacity, raising concerns about its ability to safely provide care for critically ill patients.
