Mahama Unveils Tor Expansion Plan, Targets 100,000 Barrels Daily Processing Capacity.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to expand the processing capacity of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day, describing the refinery’s revival as a major milestone achieved without financial support from the central government.
The President made the announcement during the commissioning of a new distillation unit at the refinery and the receipt of the first consignment of crude oil from Ghana’s Jubilee Fields.
He said the development marks the beginning of a new era for Ghana’s petroleum industry and strengthens the country’s drive towards energy security.
The commissioning of the new distillation unit represents another significant step in restoring the Tema Oil Refinery to full operational capacity.
The refinery has also begun processing indigenous crude oil from the Jubilee Fields, providing a reliable source of locally produced feedstock for refining activities.
President Mahama said the operationalisation of TOR is not only the fulfilment of a key government promise but also a strategic investment that will strengthen Ghana’s economy, create jobs and reduce the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery, Edmund Kombat, said the newly commissioned distillation unit will significantly enhance the refinery’s operational efficiency and improve its capacity to process crude oil to meet growing domestic demand.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, described the rehabilitation of the Tema Oil Refinery as a critical step towards positioning Ghana as a petroleum hub in the West African sub-region.
